The White Tiger on Netflix?

"See, the poor dream all their lives of getting enough to eat and looking like the rich. And what do the rich dream of?? Losing weight and looking like the poor"

The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
 Published in 2008

The White Tiger, Man Booker Prize Winner (2008) created a huge impact around the globe by unfolding the ugly truth of India. The story is set through the journey of Balram Halwai, Son of a Rickshaw driver who later became a murderer, an entrepreneur. The story is narrated by himself via a letter addressed to the Chinese Premier. Balram is a village boy who has to become a driver due to a family crisis. The story is set through the eyes of Balram on how he sees the world around him. He spokes the truth of the dark side of India - corrupt government, poverty, capitalism, gender inequalities, and the caste system.

The writing is clever, even though it's dramatic the narrative style makes it interesting. The characters in the novel are so good; the protagonist who justifies every wrongful deed by some moral principle, the landlords: The upper-class who is cruel to their employees. Balram’s Grandmother believes in the ideology of ancient traditions. The fellow driver, his teacher, his brother, father.. every character has significance in the story. Moreover, each character represents the truth of India. New York Times stated Balram as a "Modern Indian Hero" which is absolutely true.

Some of My favorite Balram Quotes are:

• The moment you recognize what is beautiful in this world, you stop being a slave.

• You ask 'Are you a man or a demon?' Neither, I say. I have woken up, and the rest of you are sleeping, and that is the only difference between us.

• The trustworthiness of servants is the basis of the entire Indian economy
